We discover together the best folk festivals (called “sagre” in Italian) of the area where to find local excellence and warm welcome.
With the arrival of summer, the tradition of country festivals in Italy comes alive. Basically every small town and village promotes its gastronomic excellence organizing festivals where squares and streets fill with local food, music and crafts, often attracting a large number of visitors from neighboring countries (and beyond).
Our territory is one of the richest with festivals and fairs in this time of the year, so here at La Fermata Resort we have decided to guide you through the busy schedule of appointments, indicating our favorite events throughout the summer.
In July we advise you not to miss the “Fair of Noble Salami of Giarolo”, which will be held in the small hamlet of Gremiasco on Thursday 13 and Friday 14. Here you can taste one of the best specialties that the territory has to offer (awarded with the "noble title" as it is produced only with the most precious parts of the pig) and that you can accompany with other local excellences, like a good glass of Timorasso.
In July too, during the last two weekends of the month (23/24 and 30/31), will be held the “Festival of Fish and Cortese” at Gavazzana, a real event that for more than twenty years has been bringing in the splendid square with a breathtaking view, dishes that seem to have come out of an elegant seafront restaurant. Just a tip: get there early and be patient. This event is very famous in the area.
Moving to August we find two more interesting appointments.
The first is the “Feast of the Fritto Misto alla Piemontese” (a mixture of fried food typical of this region), which will be held in Castellazzo Bormida from Friday 4 to Sunday 6. Here, in addition to the typical fried meat and offal, from this year it will be possible to find also a vegetarian version with fried vegetables and fruits, besides the classic dishes of the regional tradition.
The second event in August is “Chalices of Stars”, which will be held in the charming setting of Monleale Alto during the night of S. Lorenzo (August 10). Here, in addition to tasting local wines and other typical products as in the most classic of the festivals, you can devote yourself to the contemplation of the sky in search of some falling stars with the help of telescopes and astronomers from the nearby observatory.
Finally, the month of September, which as usual is the richest of feasts and festivals. Actually we were spoilt by choice, but our true favorites are two.
The first is the “Grape Harvest Festival” at the Valli Unite, a large agricultural cooperative near Montale Celli, to be held on Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd. Like every year the program includes, in addition to the traditional dinner on the farmyard with cooperative’s products, music, dancing and grape crushing. All in a relaxed atmosphere, in the name of sharing and eco-sustainability.
The second is the “Festival of Corzetto” in Pasturana, for which a date has not yet been set but which is usually held during the first weekend of September. The Corzetto is a small lasagna typical of the Ligurian tradition, which will be accompanied by various sauces and many other typical dishes. All watered by numerous local wines as well as from the renowned craft beer of Pasturana.
These are our favorites but there are dozens that we have not mentioned and which deserve a visit. So why not come and discover them with us?
